Several changes have been made for the 2005 event:
GREENDALE, Wis. (May 7, 2004) — The Young American Bowling Alliance board of directors announced that it did not approve the United States Bowling Congress proposal following the announcement that the Women's International Bowling Congress and American Bowling Congress delegations and the USA Bowling board of directors approved the USBC merger May 5. The YABA board of directors based its decision solely on what it believes is in the best interest of youth bowlers.
“YABA has been a major supporter of the initial USBC proposals and has been very involved in the pursuit of the merger of bowling’s membership organizations,” said YABA President Mitch Mitchell. “While YABA applauds the approval of the USBC merger by ABC, WIBC, and USA Bowling, the YABA board of directors feel that the modifications made to this year’s USBC proposal have raised concerns that the resulting structure may not address the best interests for youth bowling programs and services at this time.”
YABA could revisit the USBC proposal prior to the May 15 deadline for the Plan of Merger at a board of directors meeting scheduled for May 14-16 in Milwaukee. If the USBC merger were revisited in Milwaukee, the 19-person board would need a majority vote to approve the Plan of Merger.
“YABA is concerned that the youth will be lost in the merger process,” Mitchell said. “At this time, the YABA board of directors believe that YABA is still the best method for serving all youth bowlers and hopes the new USBC will embrace YABA as the youth service provider for the entire industry.”
The Milwaukee board meeting is being conducted to discuss the USBC Plan of Merger, YABA contingency planning and the future of the organization.

Shane Clawson of Woodbridge tallied 586 to place second. He was followed by No. 3, Patrick Jeffries (580 series) of Alexandria; 4, Howard Ball (575) of Largo; 5, (tie) Anthony Floyd (572) of Clinton and Jarraed Allen of Silver Spring; 7, Alvin Fitzgerald (568) of the District; and 8, Richard Farley (559) of Alexandria.
All of the aforementioned participants (including previous qualifiers Clawson, Ball, and Allen) are now eligible to compete in the 600 Club Tournament of Champions, which will take place March 24 at a site to be determined.
White, Clawson, and Jeffries each earned plaques for their finishes, as did Seat Pleasant's John Shearard, who garnered one for scoring the event's high game, a 242.
Tournament Director Tom Dale announced that the next 600 Club event—a doubles competition at Bowl America Dranesville on January 13, 2002—will be the final opportunity this season for eligible bowlers to qualify for the Tournament of Champions. The top 10 individual series at Dranesville will qualify for the T of C.
Any youth bowler who has bowled a sanctioned 600 series in the VIR-MAR-DISTRICT YABA is eligible for membership in the 600 Club. Any questions should be directed to Tom Dale, YABA 600 Club, 10 Hulvey Drive, Stafford, VA 22554-3816 (phone: 540/659-1263).
